Any Chance You and Your Horse Could Work the Flag?
Flag Work with Dave Kneller

April 1 and Aprtil 15, 2009
Corralitos Corral

Ever thought that your horse sure couldn't work cows? Because it's:

  • not a quarter horse
  • not cowy
  • is gaited
  • spooks at everything
  • flags don't relate to anything you do with your horse
  • your horse isn't nimble
  • it wouldn't be fun
Well, think again!
Matchs Hunts the Cow

Match Hackney Horse

Match, a high stepping horse, had never seen the Flag, or a cow either, until about 10 minutes before this shot. Ridden as a trail horse, it was expected that Match might have some opinions, but no one imagined that he would hunt the cow down and work it like a seasoned pro.

Joe works the Flag

Joe Black Tennessee Walking Horse

This is a far cry from Joe Black the runaway, burned out show horse! He's seen the Flag probably half a dozen times in his life. Even if he doesn't get the point of following the thing, he sure can do it. And it keeps his mind way too occupied to get him in trouble running off.

Sally Works Flag

Sally Akhel-Tekke X Arab

Sally was born and bred to ride the wide open spaces body and soul. She may not have a clue or a care what she's chasing, but she's completely tuned in to what Cristie is asking, and she sure is doing it as best as she can. Her ears show how focused she on on what she's being asked. She's gotten braver and more confident, and a lot more responsive after about a dozen goes on the Flag over the last year or so.

Pecos on Flag

Pecos Quarter Horse

Pecos was born to this, but this is only the second time he and Kathy have worked the flag together. Notice that although Kathy is focusing on the Flag, Pecos is doing all the work on his own. Her rein hand is resting lightly on his neck.

Beamer Works the Flag

Beemer Paso Fino Horse

This job is right up Beemer's alley. But Carrie hasn't been riding him all that long and this is a great opportunity for them to learn to work together on a common goal. Carrie and Beemer are working towards controllong both Beemer's mind and body for safer and saner trail riding.

Misty works the Flag

Misty Spotted Saddle Horse

Jo's dream is to ride Misty bareback and bridleless and have her lie down on cue. Misty is learning to follow cues to follow the Flag and this will help her become a more responsive horse no matter what she's asked to do.

Zinnia follows the Flag

Zinnia Warmblood X Thoroughbred

Zinnia was bred from the best dressage and racing stock for Eventing. Her breeders didn't think she was big enough, so at 10 years old Zinnia's green broke and learning to be responsive and handy following the Flag.
